Crispy on the outside and tender inside, these Sweet & Spicy Smashed Sweet Potatoes balance natural sweetness with a gentle heat and buttery glaze. A cozy, family-style side dish perfect for any meal — from weeknight dinners to festive gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs (about 4 medium) sweet potatoes
  • 23 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • Fresh parsley or green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (218°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Scrub and cut sweet potatoes into 1½-inch rounds. Boil until fork-tender (15–20 minutes).
  3. Drain and arrange on the baking sheet. Use a glass bottom to gently smash each round.
  4. Mix olive oil, butter, salt, pepper, paprika, cayenne, chili powder, and garlic powder. Brush over potatoes.
  5. Roast for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway.
  6. Mix maple syrup and butter to create a glaze. Brush over potatoes, then broil for 1–2 minutes until caramelized.
  7. Garnish with parsley or green onions and serve warm.
