Description

Delight in these homemade blueberry bagels bursting with juicy blueberries, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour for a chewier texture)
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 ½ to 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda (for boiling)
  • 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for added flavor)
  • Cinnamon sugar (for sprinkling, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Mix the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Gradually pour in the warm water and combine until a shaggy dough forms. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  2. Incorporate the Blueberries: Gently fold in the blueberries, form into a ball, place in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour.
  3. Shape the Bagels: Punch down the dough, divide into 8 pieces, and shape them into bagels.
  4. Boil the Bagels: Bring water to a boil, add baking soda, and boil bagels for 1-2 minutes per side.
  5. Bake: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C), place boiled bagels on a baking sheet, brush with egg wash, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  6. Cool and Enjoy: Let bagels cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a healthier option, consider using whole wheat flour or flaxseed meal. Avoid overcrowding the pot when boiling.
